Salvation Run

I read a crapload of comics.

Today was no exception. My fave of the Nov 14 2007 batch?

SALVATION RUN #1 from DC Comics (Written by Bill Willingham, art by Sean Chen).

The deal? A bunch of supervillains (including Joker, Clayface & The Rogues!) get exiled to some strange planet billions of miles from Earth with no heroes, no civilization (that we know of) and no way home. They're forced to form their own society and already you can tell there's going to be some leadership squabbles to look forward too (Capt Cold VS. Joker?).

Sound like fun? I thought so, despite only being sold 50/50 on the creative team.

See, something like SALVATION RUN is so strong conceptually that DC is guaranteed a readership no matter who they put on the book. It's brimming with potential and the fact that it promises to showcase a crapload of the DCU's villains is a pretty safe selling point right there.

Artwise, Sean Chen rocks. I tend to see some Brian Bolland things going on in his work (that's a good thing, be it intentional or not) sometimes and he does a great job with characters, storytelling and action. I've been enjoying his stuff since he was at Valiant and he seems like a perfect fit for the book.

Writer Bill Willingham on the other hand hasn't worked on a comic I've enjoyed for, uhhh, never. AKA "that guy who writes FABLES",

Willingham is not a bad writer by any stretch, he just tends to work on books that have been at the top of my "meh" pile for the last 5 years. And I don't hate FABLES, it just has yet to surpass the "something your girlfriend can read while you pick out your superhero comics" kind of comic. Although my main beef with his work probably stems from the should-never-have-been-more-than-a-back-up-story Shadowpact series (still amazingly being published) and the Infinite Crisis Day of Vengeance crap festival

That said, he did a good job here :)

Bring on the next issue!
